Nandaka Vihara, a Buddhist monastery situated in Bukit Mertajam (Penang), is set up primarily for the practice of meditation. It is near to Cherok Tokun Forest Recreational Park. Activities conducted here include meditation classes & retreats, dhamma talks, temporary ordination, observance of 8 precepts, chanting class and Sunday dhamma class for children.

The Samatha-Vipassana way of meditation is taught here. First, the meditator is taught Anapanasati, meditation on in-breath & out-breath. Once the meditator is successful in Anapanasati, having attained all the stages of concentration, the meditation teacher will teach Vipassana. In Vipassana, the meditator is to realize what mental & physical phenomena are; and to understand their Impermanence, Suffering and Non-self nature.

Although prior knowledge of meditation is not necessary (as the meditation teacher will provide guidance to beginners), those who have previously practiced at Pa Auk Tawya Forest Monastery in Myanmar might have better theoretical understanding of the technique.

You are welcomed to practice meditation here under the guidance of our meditation teacher. You are also welcomed to join other activities such as dhamma talks, observance of 8 precepts, etc.
