Attadīpā bhikkhave, viharatha attasaraṇā anaññasaraṇā. Dhammadīpā dhammasaraṇā anaññasaraṇā.
Attadīpānaṃ bhikkhave, viharataṃ attasaraṇānaṃ anaññasaraṇānaṃ dhammadīpānaṃ dhammasaraṇānaṃ anaññasaraṇānaṃ, yoniyeva upaparikkhitabbā1- "kiñjātikā sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā. Kiṃpahotikā"ti.
"Monks, be islands unto yourselves, be your own refuge, having no other; let the Dhamma be an island and a refuge to you, having no other. Those who are islands unto themselves... should investigate to the very heart of things: 'What is the source of sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief and despair? How do they arise?'
‘‘Sabbā disā anuparigamma cetasā,
Nevajjhagā piyataramattanā kvaci;
Evaṃ piyo puthu attā paresaṃ,
Tasmā na hiṃse paramattakāmo’’ti.
Though in thought we range throughout the world,
We'll nowhere find a thing more dear than self.
So, since others hold the self so dear,
He who loves himself should injure none.
‘‘Attānañce piyaṃ jaññā, na naṃ pāpena saṃyuje;
Na hi taṃ sulabhaṃ hoti, sukhaṃ dukkaṭakārinā.
If you hold yourself dear then don't fetter yourself with evil,
for happiness isn't easily gained by one who commits a wrong-doing.
597. Paridevaṃ pajappañca, domanassañca attano;
Attano sukhamesāno, abbahe sallamattano.
598. Abbuḷhasallo asito, santiṃ pappuyya cetaso;
Sabbasokaṃ atikkanto, asoko hoti nibbutoti.
Seeking your own happiness, you should pull out your own arrow:
your own lamentation, longing, & sorrow.
With arrow pulled out, independent, attaining peace of awareness,
all grief transcended, griefless you are unbound.
‘‘Attaññū ca kathaṃ hoti? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu attānaṃ jānāti – ‘ettakomhi saddhāya sīlena sutena cāgena paññāya paṭibhānenā’ti. No ce, bhikkhave, bhikkhu attānaṃ jāneyya – ‘ettakomhi saddhāya sīlena sutena cāgena paññāya paṭibhānenā’ti, nayidha ‘attaññū’ti vucceyya. Yasmā ca, bhikkhave, bhikkhu attānaṃ jānāti – ‘ettakomhi saddhāya sīlena sutena cāgena paññāya paṭibhānenā’ti, tasmā ‘attaññū’ti vuccati.
"And how is a monk one with a sense of himself? There is the case where a monk knows himself: 'This is how far I have come in conviction, virtue, learning, liberality, discernment, quick-wittedness.' If he didn't know himself — 'This is how far I have come in conviction, virtue, learning, liberality, discernment, quick-wittedness' — he wouldn't be said to be one with a sense of himself. So it's because he does know himself — 'This is how far I have come in conviction, virtue, learning, liberality, discernment, quick-wittedness' — that he is said to be one with a sense of himself.
9. ‘‘Tīhi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bālo abyatto asappuriso khataṃ upahataṃ attānaṃ pariharati, sāvajjo ca hoti sānuvajjo ca viññūnaṃ, bahuñca apuññaṃ pasavati. Katamehi tīhi? Kāyaduccaritena, vacīduccaritena, manoduccaritena.
Posessed of three qualities, the foolish imperfect man carries about a self that is injured and wounded, and he comes to be blameworthy, censured by the wise, and produces great demerit. What three? Evil bodily conduct, evil conduct in speech, evil mental conduct.
Atha ca pana tvaṃ, moghapurisa, attanā duggahitena amhe ceva abbhācikkhasi, attānañca khaṇasi, bahuñca apuññaṃ pasavasi.
But you, through your own poor grasp, not only slander us but also dig yourself up [by the root] and produce much demerit for yourself. That will lead to your long-term harm & suffering.
