Katamāni cattāri? Dukkhaṃ ariyasaccaṃ, dukkhasamudayaṃ ariyasaccaṃ, dukkhanirodhaṃ ariyasaccaṃ, dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā ariyasaccaṃ. Sadevake loke samārake sabrahmake sassamaṇabrāhmaṇiyā pajāya sadevamanussāya tathāgato ariyo; tasmā 'ariyasaccānī'ti vuccanti
Что-то вроде "В этом мире с богами, марами и брахмами... и простыми людьми Татхагата [является] благородным (арием), поэтому [они] и называются 'благородные' (арийские) истины"
Получается так, что говорится о неких истинах, и они называются  благородными, потому что Татхагата - благородный.
Буддхагхоса комментирует это так (жирным выделена цитата из сутты):
Цитироватьtathāgato ariyo, tasmā ''ariyasaccānī''ti yasmā ariyena tathāgatena paṭividdhattā desitattā ca tāni ariyasantakāni honti, tasmā ariyassa saccattā ariyasaccānīti attho.

Примерно смысл, по-моему, такой: То, что относится к благородному - это то, что постигнуто и преподано Татхагатой, благородным (арием), и поэтому эти "истинности" [которыми обладает] благородный (арий) и определяются как благородные (арийские) истины.

Что постигнуто и что преподано, соответственно, красной нитью проходит через все учение: вот страдание, вот возникновение страдания, вот прекращение страдания, вот путь, ведущий к прекращению страдания.

Питер Харви подробно разбирает этот термин:

True reality for the spiritually ennobled ones (or, for spiritually ennobled ones, a true reality):

Ariya-sacca, usually translated "Noble Truth," but K.R.Norman sees this as "the least likely of all the possibilities" for the meaning of ariya-sacca. He points out that the commentators interpret it as: "'truth of the noble one,' 'truth of the noble ones,' 'truth for a noble one,' i.e., the truth that will make one noble, as well as the translation 'noble truth' so familiar to us. The last possibility, however, they put at the very bottom of the list of possibilities, if they mention it at all" (A Philological Approach to Buddhism, London: School of Oriental and African Studies, 1997, p. 16). He prefers "truth of the noble one (the Buddha)," but acknowledges that the term may be deliberately multivalent. At S v 435, the Buddha is "the Spiritually Ennobled One," but the term also applies to any of the ennobled persons (see entry on "Spiritually ennobled ones"). They are different from the "ordinary person," the puthujjana, though an ordinary person can become a Noble person by insight into Dhamma.

As regards the translation of sacca, this means "truth" in many contexts, but as an adjective it means both "true" and "real." Taking sacca as meaning "truth" in the term ariya-sacca is problematic as in the above discourse it is said that the second ariya-sacca is "to be abandoned"; but surely, the "truth" on the origination of pain/the painful should not be abandoned. Rather, the "true reality" which is the origination of pain/the painful — craving — should be abandoned. Moreover, the discourse says that the Buddha understood, "This is the ariya-sacca which is pain," not "The ariya-sacca 'This is pain,'" which would be the case if sacca here meant a truth whose content was expressed in words in quote marks. The ariya-saccas as "true realities for the spiritually ennobled ones" are reminiscent of such passages as S iv 95, which says that, "That in the world by which one is a perceiver of the world, a conceiver of the world — this is called the world in the discipline of the spiritually ennobled one (ariyassa vinaye)." That is, spiritually ennobled ones understand things in a different way from ordinary people. Indeed, at Suttanipāta p.147, it is said, 'Whatever, bhikkhus, is regarded as "this is true reality" by the world... that is well seen by the spiritually ennobled ones with right wisdom as it really is as "this is deceptive"', and vice versa. Sn. p.148 then says 'Whatever, bhikkhus, is regarded as "This is pleasant" by the world... this is well seen by the spiritually ennobled ones with right wisdom as "this is painful (dukkha)"', and vice versa. This is because desirable sense-objects are impermanent and bring pain when they end, and because spiritually ennobled ones, unlike ordinary people, see the five 'bundles of grasping fuel' — the conditioned world — as painful. While ordinary people do not agree with this, or that 'birth', that is, being born, is painful, they may of course agree that, for example, 'not to get what one wants is painful'.

http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/sn/sn56/sn56.011.harv.html

"To unpack and translate "ariya-sacca" [commonly translated as 'noble truth'], one needs to look first at the meanings of each word and then how they are most plausibly related. The term sacca (Skt satya ) is regularly used in the sense of "truth," but, just as its adjectival use can mean either "true" or "real," so its noun meaning can be either "truth" or "reality" – a genuinely real existent. The Sanskrit word satya is related to the word sat , "existence/being," and both can have religious connotations.

[...]

In " ariya-sacca ," sacca is a noun, and there are three reasons why its meaning here cannot be "truth." Firstly, it is said that the second ariya-sacca (the origination of dukkha ) is to be abandoned (SN.V.422): surely, one would not want to abandon a "truth," but one might well want to abandon a problematic "reality." Secondly, it is said that the Buddha understood " 'This is the dukkha ariya-sacca ,' " not "The ariya-sacca 'This is dukkha ' " (SN.V.422), which would be the case if sacca here meant a truth whose content was expressed in the words in quote marks. Thirdly, in some suttas (e.g. SN.V.425), the first ariya-sacca is explained by identifying it with a kind of existent (the bundles of grasping-fuel – see below), not by asserting a form of words that could be seen as a "truth." In normal English usage, the only things that can be "truths" are propositions – i.e., something that is expressed in words (spoken, written, thought). It seems odd to describe an item in the world, whether physical or mental, as itself a "truth." "Truth" (and falsity) potentially comes into it only when we try to give a correct description of what there is. Something said about dukkha , even just "this is dukkha," can be a "truth," but dukkha itself can only be a true, genuine reality . 6 Hence "true reality" is here best for "sacca," which still keeps a clear connection to "truth" as the other meaning of sacca. What of the term ariya? As a noun, this means "noble one."

[...]

In this context, ariya must mean "the spiritually ennobled," and the compound " ariya-sacca " must mean "true reality for the spiritually ennobled." [...] "The Four True Realities for the Spiritually Ennobled (more briefly, Realities for the Noble Ones)"

[...]

The DCPS [Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta] says that the first of the four is "to be fully understood"; the second is "to be abandoned"; the third is "to be personally experienced"; the fourth is "to be developed/cultivated" ( bhāvitabba ). To "believe in" the ariya-saccas may play a part, but not the most important part. At the end of the DCPS, one of the Buddha's hearers, Kondañña, becomes a Stream-enterer, yet he responds not with belief in the ariya-saccas but with a kind of transformed vision: the "stainless Dhamma -eye" arises, and he has insight into the nature of these four crucial realities and their relationship: that, as dukkha has an identifiable cause, it can be ended."

ЦитироватьEkaṃ samayaṃ sambahulā therā bhikkhū cetesu [cetiyesu (syā.)] viharanti sahañcanike [sahajaniye (sī. syā. kaṃ.)]. Tena kho pana samayena sambahulānaṃ therānaṃ bhikkhūnaṃ pacchābhattaṃ piṇḍapātapaṭikkantānaṃ maṇḍalamāḷe sannisinnānaṃ sannipatitānaṃ ayamantarākathā udapādi – ''yo nu kho, āvuso, dukkhaṃ passati dukkhasamudayampi so passati, dukkhanirodhampi passati, dukkhanirodhagāminiṃ paṭipadampi passatī''ti.
Evaṃ vutte āyasmā gavampati thero [gavampatitthero (syā. kaṃ.)] bhikkhū etadavoca – ''sammukhā metaṃ, āvuso, bhagavato sutaṃ, sammukhā paṭiggahitaṃ – 'yo, bhikkhave, dukkhaṃ passati dukkhasamudayampi so passati, dukkhanirodhampi passati, dukkhanirodhagāminiṃ paṭipadampi passati. Yo dukkhasamudayaṃ passati dukkhampi so passati, dukkhanirodhampi passati, dukkhanirodhagāminiṃ paṭipadampi passati. Yo dukkhanirodhaṃ passati dukkhampi so passati, dukkhasamudayampi passati, dukkhanirodhagāminiṃ paṭipadampi passati. Yo dukkhanirodhagāminiṃ paṭipadaṃ passati dukkhampi so passati, dukkhasamudayampi passati, dukkhanirodhampi passatī'''ti

Сутта располагается в Палийском Каноне по адресу
Saṃyuttanikāya - Mahāvagga - 12. Saccasaṃyutta - 3. Koṭigāmavaggo - 10. Gavampatisutta

Taṃ kho panidaṃ dukkhasamudayo ariyasaccaṃ pahātabbanti me bhikkhave, pubbe ananussutesu dhammesu cakkhuṃ udapādi ñāṇaṃ udapādi paññā udapādi vijjā udapādi āloko udapādi.

Но отбросить-то нужно не знание, не учение, а само это обстоятельство, саму эту данность, действительность - жажду как источник страдания.
Т.е. перевод "сачча" как "истина" тут, например, хромает."

Досточтимый Тханиссаро пишет:

"The first distinction worth noting is that the word "truth" in the Canon has at least two meanings that are relevant to the paradoxes.

In some instances, "truth" means a true event or experience—something that actually happens or exists. In others, "truth" means a statement about actual events or experiences. The failure to note this distinction has bedeviled many Western writers trained in schools of thought that hold to the belief that "truth" applies only to statements, and not to events described by statements. The fact that the Buddha didn't hold to this belief is shown in the following passage, which describes unbinding itself as a truth:

"Whatever is deceptive is false; unbinding—the undeceptive—is true. Thus a monk so endowed is endowed with the highest determination for truth, for this—unbinding, the undeceptive—is the highest noble truth."  (MN 140)

Similarly, the following passage talks about experiencing a truth "with the body," which obviously means, not touching a statement, but directly realizing the experience of the truth in and of itself:

"Exerting himself, he both realizes the ultimate meaning of the truth with his body and sees by penetrating it with discernment."  (MN 95)

The Buddha also uses "truth" in this way when he teaches the duties appropriate to the four noble truths: that the truth of suffering is to be comprehended, the truth of its cause abandoned, the truth of its cessation realized, and the truth of the path to its cessation developed (SN 56:11). Obviously, these duties don't involve, for example, abandoning the statement about the cause of suffering, or developing the statement about the path. Instead, you abandon the actual qualities of mind that act as the cause, and develop the actual qualities of mind that function as the path.

Understanding these two meanings of "truth" helps to resolve the paradox concerning the relationship of the fully awakened person to the truth. On the one hand, such a person has reached the truth of a deathless dimension that is freed from attachments to all things and is not dependent on any conditions. This is the sense in which such a person has attained the truth. At the same time, however, because views and statements about truths are dependent on conditions, a person who fully attains the truth of awakening has to be free of all attachments to views and statements about truths, even to true statements about the truth of awakening itself."

Из вышеупомянутой работы Нормана:

"Take for example, the phrase "noble truth", which I mentioned a few minutes ago. It has become a commonplace to talk about the four noble truths, and this is a perfectly acceptable translation of the compound ariya-sacca: ariya means noble and sacca means truth, so ariya-sacca means noble truth. This translation is so common and so fixed in our minds, that it seems almost like blasphemy to have to point out that not only is this not the only possible translation, but it is in fact the least likely of all the possibilities. If we look at the commentators we find that they knew this very well. They point out that the compound can have a number of meanings. It can mean "truth of the noble one", "truth of the noble ones", "truth for a noble one", i.e. truth that will make one noble, as well as the translation "noble truth" so familiar to us. This last possibility, however, they put at the bottom of the list of possibilities, if they mention it at all. My own feeling is that it is very likely that "the truth of the noble one (the Buddha)" is the correct translation, although we must never lose sight of the fact that in Indian literature multiple meanings are very often intended, so that it is not always possible to say that there is a single correct meaning."

"There is, in fact, at least one further possibility, where the first element is also taken in the genitive, but as a simple possessive – "the truths of, possessed by, the noble ones". This could be a reference to the Buddhists as a whole, as these would then be truths held by the Buddhists, as opposed to anything held by the Jains or the Brāhmaṇas."

Тоже всегда считал, что Истина Благородных, т.е. то, что является истинной Реальностью для благородных, более правильно передает смысл, чем Благородная Истина. Потому что если глубоко вдаваться в смысл словосочетание Благородная Истина, получается что эта некая рожденная Истина (благого рода), тогда как эта Истина не рожденная (либо сотворенная), а открытая, постигнутая Благородными. Благородные же - это эпитет, словесно величающий тех, кто прозревает Истину.

This passage has generated a lot of discussion among scholars on account of its use of the accusative form dukkhasamudayaṃ (and later dukkhanirodhaṃ), when what the reader would expect to see are the masculine nominative forms dukkhasamudayo and dukkhanirodho.

FE or FO, the name ofthe Chief Deity of the Chineses, whom they adore as Sovereign of Heaven. They representing him Shining all in light, with his hands hid under his Robes, to shew that his Power does all things invisibly; he has at his Right-hand, Confucius, placed by the Pagans among the Gods; and on his Left-hand, Lanza or Lanca, chief of the second Sect of their Religion.

Цитировать{Confucius} openly declar'd he was not the Inventor of this (Confucian) Doctrine, that he only collected it out of his Predecessors Writings, and used to say, there was a very Holy Man in the Western Lands, that he was called, by some Zeuximgim, but said no more of him. In the Year 66, after the Incarnation of our Blessed Saviour, the Emperor Thinti sent Ambassadors towards the West to seek this Holy Man, but they stopped in an Island near the Red Sea, to consider a famous Idol named Fe, representing a Philosopher that lived 500 years before Confucius; this Idol they carried back along with them, with Instructions concerning the Worship paid to it and so introduced a Superstition, that in several things abolish'd the 'Maxims of Confucius, who always condemned Atheism and idolatry.

What I intend by Buddhism, is the system of metaphysical and social philosophy, organised by Sakya-muni, or Gautama Buddha, Neither am I speaking here of Buddhism in its modern development, as modified by intermixtures either with the popular forms of Brahmanism, or with the older superstitions of the countries where it afterwards gained a footing: for that view of it will come more properly before us, when we pass from Hindustan to China, and the other regions where it still possesses a complete ascendancy. In different words, we shall be dealing now with a philosophy rather than with a religion.

ЦитироватьTo Buddhism, therefore, we have now to direct our attention, and at the very threshold of our inquiries we are confronted with this difficulty, that its great popularity and its wide diffusion among many peoples have made it most difficult to answer the question —What is Buddhism? If it were possible to reply to the inquiry in one word, one might perhaps say that true Buddhism, theoretically stated, is Humanitarianism, meaning by that term something very like the gospel of humanity preached by the Positivist, whose doctrine is the elevation of man through man—that is, through human intellect, human intuitions, man teaching, human experiences, and accumulated human efforts—to the highest ideal of perfection; and yet something very different. For the Buddhist ideal differs toto caelo from the Positivist's, and consists in the renunciation of all personal existence, even to the extinction of humanity itself, 'The Buddhist's perfection is destruction (p. 123).

ЦитироватьWe have also learnt, that the term 'priest' is not suitably applied to Buddhist monks. For true Buddhism has no ecclesiastical hierarchy, no clergy, no priestly ordination; no divine revelation, no ceremonial rites, no prayer, no worship in the proper sense of these terms. Each man was a priest to himself in so far as he depended on himself alone for internal sanctification.

ЦитироватьChristianity is a religion, whereas Buddhism, at least in its earliest and truest form, is no religion at all, but a mere system of morality and philosophy founded on a pessimistic theory of life.
