    393.   "Katama~nca,   bhikkhave,  dukkha.m?  Ya.m  kho,  bhikkhave,  kaayika.m  dukkha.m  kaayika.m asaata.m kaayasamphassaja.m dukkha.m asaata.m vedayita.m, ida.m vuccati, bhikkhave, dukkha.m.
    394.  "Katama~nca,  bhikkhave,  domanassa.m?  Ya.m  kho,  bhikkhave,  cetasika.m  dukkha.m cetasika.m  asaata.m  manosamphassaja.m  dukkha.m asaata.m vedayita.m, ida.m vuccati, bhikkhave, domanassa.m.

http://dhamma.ru/canon/dn/dn22.htm

http://www.accesstoinsight.org/canon/sutta/majjhima/mn137.html
http://www.accesstoinsight.org/canon/sutta/samyutta/sn36-031.html
http://www.accesstoinsight.org/canon/sutta/anguttara/an06-063.html

http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/sn/sn36/sn36.006.than.html

http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/sn/sn36/sn36.004.than.html

http://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/thai/boowa/straight.html#feelings

http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/sn/sn36/sn36.008.nypo.html
http://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/nyanaponika/wheel303.html#disc

http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/mn/mn.075x.than.html

http://dhamma.ru/forum/index.php/topic,433.0.html

http://dhamma.ru/lib/authors/thanissaro/pain.htm

Aha.m kho panānanda, etarahi ji.n.no vuddho mahallako addhagato vayo-anuppatto. Āsītiko me vayo vattati. Seyyathāpi, ānanda, jajjarasaka.ta.m ve.thamissakena yāpeti, evameva kho, ānanda, ve.thamissakena maññe tathāgatassa kāyo yāpeti.

"Bhikkhus, how can these worthless men knowingly give full Acceptance to an individual less than 20 years old? An individual less than 20 years old is not resistant to cold, heat, hunger, thirst, the touch of gadflies and mosquitoes, wind and sun and creeping things; or to abusive, hurtful language. He is not the sort who can endure bodily feelings that, when they arise, are painful, sharp, stabbing, fierce, distasteful, disagreeable, deadly.'"

"Now, O monks, what is worldly joy? There are these five cords of sense desire: forms cognizable by the eye that are wished for and desired, agreeable and endearing, associated with sense-desire and tempting to lust. Sounds cognizable by the ear... odors cognizable by the nose... flavors cognizable by the tongue... tangibles cognizable by the body, wished for and desired, agreeable and endearing, associated with sense-desire and tempting to lust. It is the joy that arises dependent on these five cords of sense desire which is called 'worldly joy.'

"Now what is unworldly joy? Quite secluded from sense desires, secluded from unwholesome states of mind, a monk enters upon and abides in the first meditative absorption, which is accompanied by thought-conception and discursive thinking, and has joy and happiness born of seclusion. With the stilling of thought-conception and discursive thinking, he enters upon and abides in the second meditative absorption which has internal confidence and singleness of mind without thought conception and discursive thinking, and has joy and happiness born of concentration. This is called 'unworldly joy.'

"Master Gotama, there are some priests & contemplatives who are of this doctrine, this view: Whatever an individual feels — pleasure, pain, neither-pleasure-nor-pain — is entirely caused by what was done before. Now what does Master Gotama say to that?"

[The Buddha:] "There are cases where some feelings arise based on bile. You yourself should know how some feelings arise based on bile. Even the world is agreed on how some feelings arise based on bile. So any priests & contemplatives who are of the doctrine & view that whatever an individual feels — pleasure, pain, neither-pleasure-nor-pain — is entirely caused by what was done before — slip past what they themselves know, slip past what is agreed on by the world. Therefore I say that those priests & contemplatives are wrong."

"There are cases where some feelings arise based on phlegm... based on internal winds... based on a combination of bodily humors... from the change of the seasons... from uneven care of the body... from harsh treatment... from the result of kamma. You yourself should know how some feelings arise from the result of kamma. Even the world is agreed on how some feelings arise from the result of kamma. So any priests & contemplatives who are of the doctrine & view that whatever an individual feels — pleasure, pain, neither pleasure-nor-pain — is entirely caused by what was done before — slip past what they themselves know, slip past what is agreed on by the world.

"And how is striving fruitful, how is exertion fruitful? There is the case where a monk, when not loaded down, does not load himself down with pain, nor does he reject pleasure that accords with the Dhamma, although he is not fixated on that pleasure. He discerns that 'When I exert a [mental] fabrication against this cause of stress, then from the fabrication of exertion there is dispassion. When I look on with equanimity at that cause of stress, then from the development of equanimity there is dispassion.' So he exerts a mental fabrication against the cause of stress where there comes dispassion from the fabrication of exertion, and develops equanimity with regard to the cause of stress where there comes dispassion from the development of equanimity. Thus the stress where there comes dispassion from the fabrication of exertion is exhausted & the stress where there comes dispassion from the development of equanimity is exhausted.

"Suppose that a man is in love with a woman, his mind ensnared with fierce desire, fierce passion. He sees her standing with another man, chatting, joking, & laughing. What do you think, monks: As he sees her standing with another man, chatting, joking, & laughing, would sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, & despair arise in him?"

"Yes, lord. Why is that? Because he is in love with her, his mind ensnared with fierce desire, fierce passion..."

"Now suppose the thought were to occur to him, 'I am in love with this woman, my mind ensnared with fierce desire, fierce passion. When I see her standing with another man, chatting, joking, & laughing, then sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, & despair arise within me. Why don't I abandon my desire & passion for that woman?' So he abandons his desire & passion for that woman, and afterwards sees her standing with another man, chatting, joking, & laughing. What do you think, monks: As he sees her standing with another man, chatting, joking, & laughing, would sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, & despair arise in him?"

"No, lord. Why is that? He is dispassionate toward that woman..."

"In the same way, the monk, when not loaded down, does not load himself down with pain, nor does he reject pleasure that accords with the Dhamma, although he is not infatuated with that pleasure.

"Furthermore, the monk notices this: 'When I live according to my pleasure, unskillful mental qualities increase in me & skillful qualities decline. When I exert myself with stress & pain, though, unskillful qualities decline in me & skillful qualities increase. Why don't I exert myself with stress & pain?' So he exerts himself with stress & pain, and while he is exerting himself with stress & pain, unskillful qualities decline in him, & skillful qualities increase. Then at a later time he would no longer exert himself with stress & pain. Why is that? Because he has attained the goal for which he was exerting himself with stress & pain. That is why, at a later time, he would no longer exert himself with stress & pain.

"Suppose a fletcher were to heat & warm an arrow shaft between two flames, making it straight & pliable. Then at a later time he would no longer heat & warm the shaft between two flames, making it straight & pliable. Why is that? Because he has attained the goal for which he was heating & warming the shaft. That is why at a later time he would no longer heat & warm the shaft between two flames, making it straight & pliable.

In the same way, the monk notices this: 'When I live according to my pleasure, unskillful mental qualities increase in me & skillful qualities decline.

"This is how striving is fruitful, how exertion is fruitful.

The Essentials of Embodied Meditation

Although I am a meditation teacher I don't actually like the term 'meditation'. Most people hear this word and think that they need to stop their mind, as if the mind is the enemy. Meditation is approached as an intensive form of mind control. I remember years of Zen training in which my inner life was a war between my thoughts and my desire to be free from thoughts: it was the antithesis of peace and awareness.

Rather than 'meditation' I speak about 'just sitting'. 'Just sitting' emphasizes the physical act of sitting with the sensations of weight, breath and other bodily phenomena including sound. Rather than focusing on control, we emphasize "being with 'what is' from moment to moment". This 'being with' embraces whatever arises with respect , warmth and interest. Note that this embracing does not imply 'liking' or enjoying, it is the courageous act of opening one's interest to the pleasant and unpleasant alike.

So we see two main points: 1) a subtle, gentle intention to notice what appears (thoughts, feelings, sensations, images) and 2) a warm-hearted acceptance of whatever one notices. For many students the most important initial learning is to recognize their unfriendly, often cruel habits of self- judgment. Many people are ashamed of their own minds. When we become kinder to ourselves, the whole world changes.

Joy (pīti) and pleasure (sukha) born of seclusion (vivekajaṃ pītisukhaṃ)

The discourses differentiate between carnal joy and pleasure (sāmisā pīti and sukha) and non-carnal joy and pleasure (nirāmisā pīti and sukha). SN 36.31 Nirāmisa Sutta tells us that carnal joy and pleasure arise in dependence on the five strands of sensual pleasure, while non-carnal joy arises in the first two jhānas and non-carnal pleasure arises in the first three jhānas.

SN 48.40 Uppaṭipāṭika Sutta states that the pain faculty (dukkhindriya) ceases completely in the first jhāna, the unhappiness faculty (domanassindriya) ceases completely in the second jhāna, the pleasure faculty (sukhindriya) ceases completely in the third jhāna, and the happiness faculty (somanassindriya) ceases completely in the fourth jhāna.

SN 48.37 Dutiyavibhaṅga Sutta informs us that the pleasure and pain faculties are born of body contact (kāyasamphassaja), whereas the happiness and unhappiness faculties are born of mind contact (manosamphassaja).

Taking all of the above passages into consideration we can deduce that the non-carnal joy of the first jhāna is mental pleasure (cetasika sukha, i.e. somanassa) born of mind contact, and the non-carnal pleasure of the first jhāna is bodily pleasure (kāyika sukha) born of body contact.

This reading of these sutta sources accords with Peṭakopadesa 7.72:

The twofold bodily and mental pain does not arise in one steadied in directed thought and evaluation, and the twofold bodily and mental pleasure does arise. The mental pleasure thus produced from directed thought is joy, while the bodily pleasure is bodily feeling.

This understanding is also supported by the Vimuttimagga. The author of the Vimuttimagga was knowledgeable of and quotes from the Uppaṭipāṭika Sutta, the Paṭisambhidāmagga, the Vibhaṅga, and the Peṭakopadesa. And when commenting on the bathman simile for the first jhāna (e.g. DN 2, MN 119, etc.) he explains:

Just as the bath-powder when inside and outside saturated with moisture, adheres and does not scatter, so the body of the meditator in the first jhāna is permeated with joy and pleasure from top to bottom, from the skullcap to the feet and from the feet to the skullcap, skin and hair, inside and outside. And he dwells without falling back. Thus he dwells like a Brahma god.

[Q.] Joy (pīti) and pleasure (sukha) are said to be formless phenomena (arūpa-dhamma). How then can they stay permeating the body?

[A.] Name (nāma) depends on form (rūpa). Form depends on name. Therefore, if name has joy, form also has joy. If name has pleasure, form also has pleasure.

Again, form born from joy causes tranquility of body, and when the entire body is tranquillized there is pleasure due to the tranquility of form. Therefore there is no contradiction.

To this we can add a couple of more points. First, due to the presence of directed thought and evaluation in the first jhāna, intermittent occurrences of mental unhappiness can still arise, as indicated in SN 48.40. Thus the singleness of mind of the first jhāna isn't necessarily as unified as in the higher jhānas. Secondly, when the meditator is steadied in the first jhāna, all of the jhāna factors work together to maintain what DN 9 calls an actual refined recognition of joy and pleasure born of seclusion (vivekajapītisukhasukhumasaccasaññā). Thus, while the singleness of mind of the first jhāna may not be as unified as in the higher jhānas, it is still a very refined samādhi. It takes considerable mental development in order to be able to successfully induce and maintain this level of heightened mind (adhicitta).

http://coollib.net/b/174007/read#t23
http://books.google.com.ua/books?id=3Y2t1oQEmcoC&pg=PA198
http://www.nwinblad.com/se/se2.php

Bodily or physical pains are those caused by ailments such as cold, fever, headache and so on. Mental pains arise from factors which are purely psychological in nature. The Sāṅkhya Tattva Kaumudī speaks of desire, wrath, avarice, affection, fear, envy, grief and non-perception of particular objects as sources of mental suffering. Mental pains are more tormenting than bodily pains, for they leave behind a permanent scar on the mind, which man carries till his death. The bodily wounds, though painful, are temporary. They subside on receipt of medical attention. But the agony and torment which he suffers in mental pain lasts longer and is more tormenting.

Dhamma Wheel":

Having strong piti is a nice problem to have. I would strongly advise you to really protect and nourish your internal energy. Understand what the supporting causes are, and really protect that. I've seen several meditators who were young, healthy, attained lofty meditative states easily, and just assumed that would always be the case. But gradually through indulgence in worldly pleasures over time (what westerners would consider normal and "healthy" ways of pursuing happiness) it greatly diminishes one's internal energy and meditative power as a result. Strong piti has it's causes and conditions, and it's much easier to lose than to develop.

I have a theory that the magnitude of piti is proportional to how great of a need for the body to clear some of the energetic blockages. When big blockages are initially opening, the body will send very strong endorphins and pleasure chemicals in the brain to induce you to keep meditating and open up those blockages. But once the blockages have been cleared, then the magnitude of piti dips and gradually becomes just a comfortable softer buzz manifesting as sukha without piti, and then even sukha diminishes and drops out with the body feeling just very comfortable and light (as opposed to the initial blocked condition which would feel like heaviness, or an obstructive mass). So doing a long retreat, the piti would attenuate and diminish on its own as the body sublimates coarser forms of energy into more subtle and refined energies such as very sharp and clear mind, seeing light in meditation, body feeling young, quick, strong and light.

Observing my own practice over short and long term, being mindful of what produced piti sukha, what nourished it and what types of conditions could vary the magnitude predictably. For example, if I'm doing 6 hours of sitting meditation a day and no other activities that are energy depleting (labor intensive chores, talking to people, etc), then pitisukha tends to be very mild, because all the batteries (every cell in the body) is pretty much fully charged. What I feel in these meditations are just very comfortable, unusually comfortable but subtle piti sukha. The body feels light, strong, quick. If I do for example one 1-hour sit in the morning, followed by say 4-6 hours of energy depleting activity, and then do a 1-hour sit in the later afternoon, then I get much more intense piti-sukha closer to showering rapture end of the spectrum, it feels like all the batteries are getting charged and the brain is getting endorphins to discourage you from ending the meditation prematurely until it's charged again. But once I'm all charged up piti-sukha drops off again.

The other way I can get piti-sukha to show up in small localized patches is if I stretch (muscles, tendons, ligaments), do qigong, acupressure on my self, and any places that were tight and opened up a bit, then I feel localized piti-sukha in those areas. So places that are clear and free flowing energy, zero to very little local piti-sukha, but places that were tight and now opening up due to stretching/exercise etc, get a charge of piti-sukha.

When my microcosmic orbit first opened up, I had been stuck around the head/throat area for years, when it first opened up it felt like a plugged up bathtub had it's clogged drain opened just slightly, and I could feel a sensation of a small thread of water flowing down from the throat to the dan tien (abdominal) area. As the front side of the channel opened, then piti-sukha got to be intense. At times it felt like an orgasm was revolving along the path of the microcosmic, and particularly intense in areas that were tightest. While doing anapanasati, if I focused my spatial attention on a hot spot (that was formerly tight) I could get a mini to strong orgasm localized to that area. Different meditators open up differently, mine was more piecemeal, but I could understand how some meditators feel like their entire body is having orgasm. That's the more extreme end of the spectrum. As the front side of the microcosmic opened up, it felt like a highway that was being expanded to 2 lanes, 4 lanes, etc, and then the 1 revolution around that formerly took several minutes, as the channel cleared started approaching 1 inhale/exhale cycle per revolution.

There's a reason the buddha uses water in the jhaana similes for 1-3, because often the piti-sukha feels like water flow. But also heat, electricity, comfortable vibrations.
