http://dhamma.ru/forum/index.php?topic=942.msg7437#msg7437

Bahupada

Цитироватьsiyā nu kho, bhante, bhikkhuno tathārūpo samādhipaṭilābho yathā neva pathaviyaṃ pathavisaññī, ... na nevasaññānāsaññāyatane nevasaññānāsaññāyatanasaññī assa, na idhaloke idhalokasaññī assa, na paraloke paralokasaññī assa; saññī ca pana assā''ti

Цитироватьetaṃ santaṃ etaṃ paṇītaṃ yadidaṃ sabbasaṅkhārasamatho sabbūpadhipaṭinissaggo taṇhākkhayo virāgo nirodho nibbāna'nti. Evaṃ kho, ānanda, siyā bhikkhuno tathārūpo samādhipaṭilābho...

Evaṃ kho, ānanda, siyā bhikkhuno tathārūpo samādhipaṭilābho...; saññī ca pana assā

Dīghaṃ vā assasanto 'dīghaṃ assasāmī'ti pajānāti, dīghaṃ vā passasanto 'dīghaṃ passasāmī'ti pajānāti

http://www.accesstoinsight.org/canon/majjhima/mn121.html :

If sa~n~na is understood as apperception, so that neither-apperception-nor-non-apperception is the last of the arupa jhana attainments (exempting the theme less), and the last abode for becoming rather than neither-perception-nor-non-perception, it would mean that while the disturbances from consciousness (as the act that cognizes the already formed apperception) wouldn't be present, there would be only this disturbance no appercepting neither not no appercepting, (as the act of codifying, and configuring a mental note of that very perception).

Taking the gradual steps from the cula-su~n~nata, the sphere of infinite space  is empty of disturbation of the form, while the disturbation of infinite space, and therefore the perception, apperception and (infinite) consciousness of  infinite space are present.

The sphere of infinite consciousness is the result of the purgation of the perception 'infinite space', leaving only the infinite consciousness (that earlier was cognizing infinite space and now is conscious of no space whatsoever, yet remains),  the perception  of infinite consciousness, and the apperception (or labeling)  on base of that very perception  noting 'infinite consciousness' and the cognizing result 'Infinite consciousness';

The sphere of nothing purges consciousness(of the earlier spheres) leaving no sign [nimitta] to be perceived nor apperceived nor cognized, nevertheless this process is itself perceived, apperceived, and cognized  'there is nothing', in and of itself, being this a subtler than the former.

The sphere of neither-'ap'perception nor no-'ap'perception, purges  the labeling created by either apperception or non apperception, leaving nothing to be cognized, and no disturbation on base of the mind forming labels and subsequent processes, never the less perception remains, that which is connected to the six internal and external media sense bases. The theme less concentration, purging the concentration based on  not apperception  neither not non apperception,  has only the disturbation of the six media sense bases, leaving as the only sublimation left the cessation of perception and feeling. (I assume that the relation of  this attainment to the previous sphere is analog with that of the forth and the fifth form jhana, just an alternate development) Keeping the previous arguments  that would mean cessation of apperception and feeling, which is the very attainment of release, Nibbana. Where apperception is ended for good and fabrications, such as mind labels( nama-rupa) are root less, and those remaining are dependent to the remaining span of life of the Arahat.

Phu.t.tho, bhikkhave, vedeti, phu.t.tho ceteti, phu.t.tho sa~njaanaati.

Mya: .82

Skt. samjñā (Pali, saññā) is admittedly difficult to render into modern concepts, but I think that 'ideation' approximates a large part of the broad semantic sphere covered by the term.

The Kosa defines the term in the following way: samjñā nimittodgrahaṇātmikā II 14c-d II yāvan nīlapītadīrghahrasvastrīpuruṣamitrāmitrasukhaduḥkhādinimittodgrahaṇam asau samjñā-skandhaḥ. (AKBh 10, 15-16) 'samjñā has the nature of the grasping of characteristics II 14c-d II. This aggregate of samjñā is the grasping of characteristics such as blue, yellow, long, short, woman, man, friend, foe, pleasant, suffering, etc.' (cf. also AKBh 45, 20-21). Skt. udgrahaṇa literally means 'picking up' or 'extracting' and refers here to selectively perceiving those essential characteristics which define an object or concept. In this sense, I think that it matches the basic understanding of perception (as opposed to sensation) in modern psychology.The term is explained in Britannica as: 'perception, the process whereby sensory stimulation istranslated into organized or meaningful experience' (vol. 9, p. 279; cf. also 'Human Perception',vol. 25, pp. 481-502). For instance, the physiological reactions in the eye which respond to light,colour, etc. represent sensation. Integrating and organising these physiological reactions in sucha way as to permit the recognition of the light, color, etc. as representing, say, a pictureconstitute perception (see Hockenbury & Hockenbury 2000, 88ft). Though 'perception' is oftenadopted by modem translators as a rendering for saññā/samjñā, the examples given by Vasubandhu show that the Buddhist tradition construed the term as more complex and comprehensive than the perception of qualia such as blue. Recognising someone as friend or foesupposes far more mental operations than a simple colour perception. The same holds true for pleasure and suffering. This is obviously not a mere reaction of attraction or rejection (which is usually covered by the concept of vedanā), and a samjñā of sukha or duḥkha seems to imply acertain degree of conscious judgement.

In this context, Seyfort Ruegg's pertinent remarks (1998, 138) on the the unsuitable translation
of samjñā as 'perception' can also be mentioned. Seyfort Ruegg suggests '''notion, idea", (or eventually, "apperception")' (ibid.). Although not a technical term regularly employedin modem psychology, 'ideation' seems to me also capable to convey the wide range of meanings covered by saññā/samjñā. It may actually be the lack of its precise scientific definition that makes it possible for 'ideation' to accommodate a broad semantic spectrum.

An example of such lexical incoherence is the rendering of Sanskrit samjna and Pali saññā "idea, notion" by the English word "perception" if, at the same time, the epistemological term pratyaksa (pramana) is to be rendered as "(direct) perception"; for if in a well thought-out and coherent terminology samjna is to be translated by "perception," pratyaksa could not be, and conversely.

"THE FIVE KHANDHAS: THEIR THEATMENT IN THE NIKAYAS AND EARLY ABHIDHAMMA":

The stock definition of saññā in the nikdyas illustrates its function by reference to various colours. It is this, it seems, that has led translators to render saññā in the context of the khandhas as "perception". Yet, as Alex Wayman has pointed out, there are a number of passages in which the translation "perception" fails to make sense of the nikāyas' usage of saññā as a technical term. Wayman suggests that it is the word "idea" that should regularly be employed as a translation of saññā. This certainly seems to make better sense of the technical usage in connection with the khandhas. A saññā of, say, "blue" then becomes, not so much a passive awareness of the visual sensation we subsequently agree to call "blue", but rather the active noting of that sensation, and the recognising of it as "blue" - that is, more or less, the idea of "blueness". This appears to be in general how saññā is understood in the commentarial literature.

Freedom and bondage":

Recognition

And why, Bhikkhus, do you say "recognition" [sanna]? One recognises [sanjanati], therefore it is called "recognition". What does one recognise? One recognises blue-green, yellow, red, and white. One recognises, therefore it is called "recognition".

Recognition takes the raw percept, then classifies and interprets it. The eye sees forms, which are simply shifting patterns of colour. Recognition takes the changing patterns of colour and, on the basis of past experience, interprets them as "man close by", "woman further away", "house in the distance", etc. Walpola Rahula explains:

It should be clearly understood that consciousness does not recognise an object. It is only ... awareness of the presence of an object. When the eye comes in contact with a colour, for instance blue, visual consciousness arises which simply is awareness of the presence of a colour; but it does not recognise that it is blue.... It is perception [sanna] ... that recognises that it is blue. The term "visual consciousness" is a philosophical expression denoting the same idea as is conveyed by the ordinary word "seeing". Seeing does not mean recognising.

Eye consciousness sees a pattern of black symbols against a white background; recognition recognises written words on a page. Hearing consciousness hears random sounds; recognition recognises some of them as words expressing meaning and some as background noise. Similarly with the other senses: recognition takes the raw data of experience and recognises patterns and structures based on our past experiences. Recognition is made up of "a mixed bag of memories, concepts, dispositions, and material elements". From it "we carve out discrete objects out of the flux of experience". Like sensation, recognition is based directly on sense experience, and is therefore caused by contact.

(I.6) The main Buddhist analysis of personality is that it consists of the five khandhas, 'groups', or upādāna-kkhandhas, 'groups of grasping'. These are five groups of processes that we normally grasp at as 'I' or 'me'. They can, thus, loosely be described as the 'personality-factors' (and they will be referred to in this way in this work). The five are:

i) rūpa: '(material) form', meaning the body;
ii) vedanā: 'feeling', the hedonic tone of any experience, its aspect as being pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral;
iii) saññā: 'cognition', that which recognizes, classifies and iterprets objects of the senses and mind;
iv) the saṅkhāras: a number of 'consctructing activities', of which the typical one is cetanā[/i], or volition; others include such things as emotional states and attention;
v) viññāṇa: generally translated by the rather vague term 'consciousness', but, as argued in chapter 9, better seen as 'discernment': sensory or mental awareness which discerns the pasic perts/aspects of its object.

http://books.google.com/books?id=1azdAAAAQBAJ&pg=PA4

'Saññā' is often translated as 'perception', but his is inappropriate, both because it is only part of the perceptual process and because one can have saññā of a mental object but cannot, in English, be said to 'perceive' such an object. Johansson (1979: 93) and Wayman (1976: 326) both use 'idea' for saññā, but while this might cover saññā of a mental object, it does not cover saññā of a visual form, for example. What is involved simply in seeing can hardly be termed an 'idea'. The word 'sa-ññā' and its verbal form 'sañ-jānāti' clearly refer to some kind of knowledge or knowing which is done in an associative, connective, linking (sa-) way. An English term which parallels this type of derivation is 'co-gnition', which can, in fact, be seen as appropriate translation.

Saññākkhandha: Perception is the second of the four mental aggregates and has three functions: noting of an object's distinctive qualities, marking the object for perceiving again, and recognising what has been previously marked (thus playing a role in memory). The best illustration of this, perhaps, comes from the Aṭṭhasālinī, a commentary on the Abhidhamma text Dhammasaṅganī, which says:

    "The noting of an object as blue-green, etc., is perception. It has the function of noting and the function of recognising what has been previously noted... We may see this procedure when the carpenter recognises a piece of wood which he has marked by specialised knowledge; when we recognise a man by his sectarial mark on the forehead...when the king's treasurer, in charge of the royal wardrobe, having had a label bound on each dress..."

Pahalawattage Don Premasiri:

In the standard description of the cognitive process occurring in the Pali canon, the dependent arising of saññā is stated as follows:

    "Depending on the eye and material forms there arises visual consciousness. With the coming together of these three, arises sense impingement. Depending upon sense impingement arises sensation. What one senses, is cognized in the saññā way."10 (note that the term saññā has been left untranslated).

The scriptures regularly explain saññā as that mode of cognition which is consequent upon sensation, arising from the sensory impingement which occurs in instances when the respective sense consciousness arises due to the interaction between a particular sense organ and a corresponding sense object. Thus three things have to come together for sensory impingement (phassa) to take place. They are the sense faculty (indriya), the sense object (ārammaṇa) and the sense consciousness (viññāṇa). Saññā is explained as the process of concept formation and identifying the external reality in terms of concepts. Identifying the content of visual experience for instance in terms of colors blue, yellow, red, white etc. is part of the activity of cognition in terms of saññā.
