... in explanation of animitta-cetovimutti, signless deliverance of mind (s. cetovimutti, vimokkha), it is said, 'sabba-nimittānam amanasikārā', it refers to the 6 sense-objects (Com. to M. 43), and has therefore to be rendered "by paying no attention to any object (or object-ideas)." - A pleasant or beautiful object (subha-nimitta, q.v.) is a condition to the arising of the hindrance of sense-desire; a 'repellent object' (patigha-nimitta) for the hindrance of ill-will; contemplation on the impurity of an object (asubha-nimitta; s. asubha) is an antidote to sense-desire.

"And what is the theme-less awareness-release? There is the case where a monk, through not attending to all themes, enters & remains in the theme-less concentration of awareness. This is called the theme-less awareness-release.

...

"Passion is a making of themes [nimitta]. Aversion is a making of themes. Delusion is a making of themes. In a monk whose fermentations are ended, these have been abandoned, their root destroyed, like an uprooted palm tree, deprived of the conditions of existence, not destined for future arising. Now, to the extent that there is theme-less [animitta] awareness-release, the unprovoked awareness-release is declared the foremost. And this unprovoked awareness-release is empty of passion, empty of aversion, empty of delusion.

MN 43. "Lust is a maker (karana) of signs (nimitta), hate is a maker of signs, delusion is a maker of signs."

Примечание Бхиккху Бодхи: "Majjhima-Nikaya-Atthakatha interprets the phrase 'maker of signs' (nimitta-karana) to mean that lust, hate and delusion brand a person as a worldling or a noble one, as lustful, hating or deluded. But it may also mean that these defilements cause the mind to ascribe a false significance to things as being permanent, pleasurable, self, or beautiful."

These three types of unskillful thinking cease without remainder in one who dwells with his mind well established in the four frames of reference or who develops the themeless concentration. This is reason enough, monks, to develop the themeless concentration. The themeless concentration, when developed & pursued, is of great fruit, great benefit.

"Very well then, Kotthita my friend, I will give you an analogy; for there are cases where it is through the use of an analogy that intelligent people can understand the meaning of what is being said. It is as if two sheaves of reeds were to stand leaning against one another. In the same way, from name-&-form as a requisite condition comes consciousness, from consciousness as a requisite condition comes name-&-form. From name & form as a requisite condition come the six sense media. From the six sense media as a requisite condition comes contact. From contact as a requisite condition comes feeling. From feeling as a requisite condition comes craving. From craving as a requisite condition comes clinging/sustenance. From clinging/sustenance as a requisite condition comes becoming. From becoming as a requisite condition comes birth. From birth as a requisite condition, then aging & death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, & despair come into play. Such is the origination of this entire mass of suffering & stress.

"If one were to pull away one of those sheaves of reeds, the other would fall; if one were to pull away the other, the first one would fall. In the same way, from the cessation of name-&-form comes the cessation of consciousness, from the cessation of consciousness comes the cessation of name-&-form. From the cessation of name-&-form comes the cessation of the six sense media. From the cessation of the six sense media comes the cessation of contact. From the cessation of contact comes the cessation of feeling. From the cessation of feeling comes the cessation of craving. From the cessation of craving comes the cessation of clinging/sustenance. From the cessation of clinging/sustenance comes the cessation of becoming. From the cessation of becoming comes the cessation of birth. From the cessation of birth, then aging & death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress, & despair all cease. Such is the cessation of this entire mass of suffering & stress."

http://www.palikanon.com/english/wtb/s_t/samaapatti.htm

Eighteen chief kinds of insight-knowledge (or principal insights, mahā-vipassanā) are listed and described in Vis.M. XXII, 113:

      (11) of the unconditioned (or signless, animittānupassanā),

http://www.palikanon.com/english/wtb/u_v/vipassanaa.htm

Also, from Ven. Ñāṇananda's Magic of the Mind:

"Sense-perception at all levels relies largely on signs.... It is due to the processes of grasping and recognition implicit in sense-perception that the sign has come to play such an important part in it.... Lust, hatred and delusion are the 'things' which, according to the teaching of the Tathāgata, are signified by all sense-percepts. 'Lust, friend, is a something; hatred is a something; delusion is a something.' (M i 298, Mahāvedalla S.) 'Lust, friends, is something significative, hatred is something significative, delusion is something significative' (ibid)."

And by contemplating impermanence, etc. to the point of inducing dispassion, signs are abandoned. There's then nothing of significance to grasp or cling to. Paṭisambhidāmagga Vimokkhakathā:

"When he gives attention as impermanent his mind emerges from the sign; his mind enters into the signless.... Gnosis of contemplation of the signlessness of form... feeling... recognition... fabrications... consciousness... etc., is signless deliverance because it liberates from all signs."

SRI BHAGAVAN SAID:

...

28 & 29. All oil exists in the seed (i.e., pervading the whole of it) and butter (Ghrta) in cheese (Ksîra, i.e.,
milk boiled and thickened). As smell exists in the flower, and juice in fruits, so does the Jîvãtman which
permeates the whole universe, also exists in the human body. Like the fire hidden in the bosom of wood,
and like the air that pervades the whole limitless Akãsa, Atman, the dweller in the caves of Manas,
unseen and unperceived, becomes its own expressor, and walks in the Akãsa of the human heart.

30. Though the Jîvãtman dwells in the heart, yet it has its abode in the mind; and though dwelling in the
heart it is itself mindless. The Yogî, who sees such an Atman in his own heart through the help of his own
mind, gradually becomes a Siddha himself.

31. He that has been able to make his mind entirely unsupported and one with the Akãsa, and to know
the unchangeable One, his state is called the state of Samãdhi.

32. Though living upon air he that daily practises Samãdhi to make himself happy with the drink of the
Yoga-nectar, becomes able to destroy the destroyer.

33. He that contemplates the Atman as No-thing above, No-thing below, No-thing in the middle, and Nothing
all round, his state is called the state of Samãdhi. (That is Nirãlamba, non-supported or selfsupported
samãdhi) The Yogî who thus realizes the No-thingness of the Atman becomes free from all
virtues and vice.

ARJUNA ASKED:

34. Tell me, O Kesava, how Yogîs should meditate upon the colourless and formless Brahman, when the
mind is unable to think upon that which it has never seen, and that which can be seen is material, and
consequently subject to destruction (change)?

SRI BHAGAVAN SAID:

35. That which is full above, full below, full in the middle, and full all round, is the All-full Atman and he
that contemplates the Ãtman thus, is said to be in the state of Samãdhi.

ARJUNA ASKED:

36. Tell me, O Kesava, how the Yogî is to practise meditation when the Sãlamba which thou has just
described is unreal and that which is Nirãlamba means No-thingness?

SRI BHAGAVAN SAID:

37. He who, after purifying his mind, contemplates the pure Paramãtman, and looks unto his own Self as
the one vast undivided whole of the manifested universe, becomes happy by knowing the Brahman.

Now, it has elsewhere been said: 'Verily, when a knower has restrained his mind from the external, and the breathing spirit (prāṇa) has put to rest objects of sense, thereupon let him continue void of conceptions.

Aniccato manasikaroto kuto cittaṃ vuṭṭhāti, kattha cittaṃ pakkhandati? Dukkhato manasikaroto kuto cittaṃ vuṭṭhāti, kattha cittaṃ pakkhandati? Anattato manasikaroto kuto cittaṃ vuṭṭhāti, kattha cittaṃ pakkhandati? Aniccato manasikaroto nimittā cittaṃ vuṭṭhāti, animitte cittaṃ pakkhandati. Dukkhato manasikaroto pavattā cittaṃ vuṭṭhāti, appavatte cittaṃ pakkhandati. Anattato manasikaroto nimittā ca pavattā ca cittaṃ vuṭṭhāti, animitte appavatte nirodhe nibbānadhātuyā cittaṃ pakkhandati.

Vipassanā hi niccanimittaṃ dhuvanimittaṃ sukhanimittaṃ attanimittañca ugghāṭeti. Tasmā animittāti kathitā. Sā ca kiñcāpi taṃ nimittaṃ ugghāṭeti, sayaṃ pana nimittadhammesu caratīti sanimittāva hoti.

Animittamaggo pana rāgādinimittānaṃ niccanimittādīnañca abhāvena sarasatova nāmaṃ labhati, no paccanīkato. Na hi so saṅkhāranimittārammaṇāya aniccānupassanāya paṭipakkho. Aniccānupassanā panassa anulomabhāve ṭhitāti.

Ettha ca te māluṅkyaputta diṭṭhasutamutaviññātabbesu dhammesu diṭṭhe diṭṭhamattaṃ bhavissati, sute sutamattaṃ bhavissati, mute mutamattaṃ bhavissati, viññāte viññātamattaṃ bhavissati. "Then, Malunkyaputta, with regard to phenomena to be seen, heard, sensed, or cognized: In reference to the seen, there will be only the seen. In reference to the heard, only the heard. In reference to the sensed, only the sensed. In reference to the cognized, only the cognized. That is how you should train yourself. When for you there will be only the seen in reference to the seen, only the heard in reference to the heard, only the sensed in reference to the sensed, only the cognized in reference to the cognized, then, Malunkyaputta, there is no you in connection with that. When there is no you in connection with that, there is no you there. When there is no you there, you are neither here nor yonder nor between the two. This, just this, is the end of stress."

Knowing an idea — mindfulness lapsed — attending to the theme [nimitta] of 'endearing,'
impassioned in mind, one feels and remains fastened there.
One's feelings, born of the idea, grow numerous,
Greed & annoyance injure one's mind.
Thus amassing stress, one is said to be far from Unbinding.

''Animittañca bhāvehi, mānānusayamujjaha;

Develop the theme-less (animitta).
Cast out conceit.
Then, from breaking through conceit,
you will go on your way at peace.

"In conclusion, let us draw together the strands of this survey. In a person's normal state, it is often the case that consciousness runs after, follows, clings to and is tied to "signs," that is, to "external" sensory objects that are taken as more than simple phenomena, but as indicating "people" and "things" in the world that are experienced as entrancing. The mind experiences them as "signs" with pleasant, sensuous, annoying, or dear associations. It also misperceives them so as to see permanence, happiness and I-ness where there is none."

What Else Remains in Śūnyata?
An Investigation of Terms for Mental Imagery in the Madhyāntavibhāga-Corpus

Awareness in which there is no vikalpa is, therefore, properly conformed to the nature of things. It is free from concepts and percepts whose objects are unreal, as well as from all misleading phenomenal properties. Is it then free from all concepts and all percepts? Consider this:

viparyaso hi vikalpah / vikalpanalambanatvan na viparyasavastu /
nimittanirodhacl animittam iti / atranimittatvam nimittanirodha ucyate /
etad eva pradarSanartham aha / sarvanimittabhavad iti / sarvair eva
samskrtasamskrtanimittaih Sunyata Sunyety animittam iti / (MV-t 1.2.2)

Error is discriminative construction. [Emptiness, understood as] free from error is so because it is not an object for discriminative construction. [Emptiness, understood as] free from mental images is so because mental images have ceased in it. This means that it possesses the property of being without mental images, which in turn is indicated by the words 'because of the absence of all mental images.' Emptiness is empty of the mental images of all tilings, conditioned and unconditioned: this is what it means to say that it is free from mental images.

We have translated the technical term nimitta in this passage as "mental images"—a point to which we shall shortly return. For the moment we simply note that this passage clearly equates the absence of discriminative construction with the absence not only of misleading qualia in particular moments of experience, but of all qualia, all mental images with phenomenal properties of any kind (if this is indeed what nimitta means here).

...

A somewhat similar case can be made for nimitta, which we are here translating "mental image." This term is sometimes used to mean something close to "cause," as when MV-ṭ glosses it with kārana (vikṣepanimittopaśamanāc chamathaḥ / Śamathādinimittam śamathādi kāraṇam, MV-ṭ 4.1.7; compare 3.10.8). But it more often means the image of an object in the mind (arthapratibimba is used as a gloss for it in MV-ṭ 1.1.4); and even when its connection with chains of cause and effect is emphasized (MV-ṭ 3.8: anyonyanimittabhāvād nimittam), the context is always that of explaining the causes that produce particular affective or cognitive states in an experiencing subject. And primary among such causes is the presence of some mental image—understood broadly, to comprise both concepts and percepts. The discussion of the six kinds of distraction (vikṣepa) in 5.2.3.1 is typical. One of these six is nimittavikṣepa ("distraction by mental images"), and the reference appears to be to mental images arising in meditation that might produce distraction. A practitioner might, for example, experience a mental image that she takes to be her Self (dhyayy ayaṁ mahātmety evcun sambhāvanātmanīty anena nimittena samādhau prayuktasyāśaya-vilayatvāl ladbhād alabdhād va kuśalapakṣād vikṣepo nimittavikṣepa ity ucyate, MV-ṭ 5.2.3.1), and be distracted by it.

In our discussion of vikalpa we have already noted that emptiness is said to be animitta, free from mental images (1.2.2); this might seem to be the strongest piece of evidence we yet have for the conclusion that there can be no mental images therein. But let us look a little more closely. In 2.4.3 there is an interesting analysis of the obstacles (avarana) to progress on the part of the bodhisattva through the ordered stages (bhumi) of the meditational path. In the discussion of the seventh stage MV-bh says that in it one removes diversity (nanatva) in one's experience because one no longer has any mental images (nimitta). MV-t explains that since there is no diversity in the ground of the real (dharmadhatu) all mental images—even those that have aided the practitioner in penetrating to it—must become undifferentiated therein, and one will have an awareness in which all mental images are of the same kind (sarvanimittaikarasakarajnanena, MV-t 2.3.2). One enters a condition, it seems, in which mental images are in some significant respect all of the same kind, and so one no longer fights against or is concerned about conventional reality, which consists precisely in mental images that are of different kinds (yataḥ sarvanimittāny animittatvena pratividhyati nimittakṛtaṁ ca vyavahāraṁ na virodhayati, MV-ṭ 2.3.2). This condition, the texts go on to say, becomes effortless or spontaneous (anābhoga) on the eighth stage.

But this is not precisely a condition in which there are no mental images of any kind. It is, rather, a condition in which, in the most important respect of all, every mental image shares the same property: that of not producing cognitive or affective error, which requires that every mental image be free of phenomenal properties that might produce such error. The prime candidate here, of course, are those properties produced by the discriminative construction that the MV-corpus calls vikalpa. The predicate "imagelessness" (nirnimittata) then has a double meaning: there are no images in emptiness if by nimitta is meant an image with error-producing phenomenal properties; but there are images in emptiness if by that is meant a phenomenally rich flow of experience in which all objects are experienced directly and without distortion. The MV-corpus in fact goes on to suggest just this when it says that in the ninth stage the practitioner gains mastery (vasita) over certain kinds of awareness as a result of her effortless entry into "imagelessness." The kinds of awareness in question here have to do with such phenomenally complex matters as knowledge of the grammar, meaning, syntax, and lexica of natural languages (technically, the four pratisamvit: of dharma, artha, nirukti, and pratibhana), and such awareness necessarily involves the presence to its possessor of rich phenomenal content.

The Sanimitta Sutta (A 2.8.1), a discourse of two lines, declares:

Sanimittā bhikkhave uppajjanti pāpakā akusalā dhammā, no animittā.

Bhikshus, evil unwholesome states arise in connection with mental signs, not without them.
Thus, with the letting go of mental signs itself, those evil unwholesome states will not exist. (A 2.8.1/1:82)

From Craving to Liberation – Excursions into the Thought-world of the Pāli Discourses (1)
Anālayo

"... another type of liberation, the "mental liberation through signlessness", animittā cetovimutti , (given that the counterpart to any perception, saññā , is the "sign", nimitta , of what is perceived). Such mental liberation through signlessnes s is the escape from all signs (DN III 249; see in more detail Harvey 1986). Its attainment requires not giving attention to any sign and directing awareness to the signless element (MN I 297). The expression "signless deliverance", animitta vimokkha , further qualified to be also a "deliverance" related to "emptiness", suññata vimokkha , occurs in two Dhammapada verses that clearly intend the attainment of final liberation (Dhp 92- 93). Concentration on signlessness is in fact one of the different paths to the deathless (SN IV 360). Yet, meditative experiences of signlessness can also be related to lesser levels of development. This can be seen from a discourse in the Aṅguttara-nikāya , which describes how a monk might pride himself on having attained concentration of the mind that is signless, but then through over socializing comes under the influence of passion and eventually disrobes (AN III 397). Hence the signless liberation of the mind also covers types of liberation that are only temporary."

6. Hatthisariputtasuttaṃ – Venerable Hatthisariputta

...

Here, friend, a certain person not attending to any sign, attains to the signless concentration of the mind. Thinking I am the gainer of the signless concentration of the mind, mixes up with the bhikkhus, ... re ... he would give up the holy life and come to the low life.

Like the king or the king's chief minister who has come on the highway with the fourfold army, stays in the forest for one night and on account of the sounds of elephants, horses, chariots, the foot soldiers, the sound of drums small and large and the sound of conches. the sound of the crickets have vanished. Now the sound of crickets will not be heard in this forest stretch. Is it correctly said? No, venerable sir. There is a possibility that when that king or the king's chief minister goes away from that forest stretch the sounds of the crickets will appear again. In like manner, a certain person not attending to any sign, attains to the signless concentration of the mind. Thinking I am the gainer of the signless concentration of the mind, mixes up with the bhikkhus, ... re ... he would give up the holy life and come to low life.

After that Citta Hatthisariputta giving up the holy life came to the lower life. The co-associates of Citta Hatthisariputta approached venerable Mahakottita, and asked: Did venerable Mahakottita penetratingly know the mind of Citta Hatthisariputta, that although Citta Hatthisariputta is a gainer of these abidings and attainments, yet he will give up the holy life and come to lay life? Friend, I penetratingly saw the mind of Citta Hatthisariputta, as a gainer of these abidings and attainments and knew he would give up the holy life and come to lower life. Even the gods informed me about this. Then the co-associates of Citta Hatthisariputta approached The Blessed One, worshipped, sat on a side and said to The Blessed One: Venerable sir, Citta Hatthisariputta is a gainer of these abidings and attainnments, yet he gave up the holy life and came to the lower life. Bhikkhus, before long Citta will come to the non-sensual sphere.

Then before long Citta Hatthisariputta shaved his head and beard and wearing yellow clothes left the household and went forth. Then Citta Hatthisariputta withdrawing from the crowd and abiding diligent to dispel, before long, in this very life by himself realizing attained the noble end of the holy life, for which sons of clansmen rightfully leave the household and become homeless. He knew, birth is destroyed, the holy life is lived, what should be done is done, there is nothing more to wish. Venerable Citta Hatthisariputta became one of the noble ones.
