http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~lkawgw/hbuddhism.htm
http://books.google.com.ua/books?id=EBCqWLgOz58C&pg=PA158&lpg=PA158

The best state of concentration for the sake of developing all-around insight is one that encompasses a whole-body awareness. There were two exceptions to Ajaan Fuang's usual practice of not identifying the state you had attained in your practice, and both involved states of wrong concentration. The first was the state that comes when the breath gets so comfortable that your focus drifts from the breath to the sense of comfort itself, your mindfulness begins to blur, and your sense of the body and your surroundings gets lost in a pleasant haze. When you emerge, you find it hard to identify where exactly you were focused. Ajaan Fuang called this moha-samadhi, or delusion-concentration.

The second state was one I happened to hit one night when my concentration was extremely one-pointed, and so refined that it refused settle on or label even the most fleeting mental objects. I dropped into a state in which I lost all sense of the body, of any internal/external sounds, or of any thoughts or perceptions at all — although there was just enough tiny awareness to let me know, when I emerged, that I hadn't been asleep. I found that I could stay there for many hours, and yet time would pass very quickly. Two hours would seem like two minutes. I could also "program" myself to come out at a particular time.

After hitting this state several nights in a row, I told Ajaan Fuang about it, and his first question was, "Do you like it?" My answer was "No," because I felt a little groggy the first time I came out. "Good," he said. "As long as you don't like it, you're safe. Some people really like it and think it's nibbana or cessation. Actually, it's the state of non-perception (asaññi-bhava). It's not even right concentration, because there's no way you can investigate anything in there to gain any sort of discernment. But it does have other uses." He then told me of the time he had undergone kidney surgery and, not trusting the anesthesiologist, had put himself in that state for the duration of the operation.

In both these states of wrong concentration, the limited range of awareness was what made them wrong. If whole areas of your awareness are blocked off, how can you gain all-around insight? And as I've noticed in years since, people adept at blotting out large areas of awareness through powerful one-pointedness also tend to be psychologically adept at dissociation and denial. This is why Ajaan Fuang, following Ajaan Lee, taught a form of breath meditation that aimed at an all-around awareness of the breath energy throughout the body, playing with it to gain a sense of ease, and then calming it so that it wouldn't interfere with a clear vision of the subtle movements of the mind. This all-around awareness helped to eliminate the blind spots where ignorance likes to lurk.

At the end of three weeks I was able to maintain uninterrupted mental one-pointedness for prolonged periods. During such periods nothing was present in consciousness but the meditation object, the sensations in the abdomen. The rest of the body, and the world outside it, had ceased to exist. I identified completely with the sensations: I was the sensations. Increasingly I experienced synaesthetic effects. For example, I often "saw" the pattern of sensations in the abdomen in various forms -- usually as an oscillating system of levers, or as a pulsating globe of light. On my teacher's advice I took this mental image as my new object of concentration. (The sitting practice had, by this stage, become the principal component of the meditative regime; mindful walking was now of secondary importance.) Then one day, as I was concentrating on my pulsating image, it suddenly disappeared, plunging me into a pitch-back emptiness. My teacher regarded this strange experience as an important meditative attainment, and told me to cultivate and prolong it. I followed his instruction for a time -- until I learned that the objective was to prolong the state of emptiness to twenty-four hours. The achievement of that feat would constitute successful completion of the meditation course.

http://www.lioncity.net/buddhism/index.php?showtopic=21109

Ole Holten Pind
Buddhaghosa — His Works and Scholarly Background

If internal evidence shows that it is unlikely that the aṭṭhakathās which Buddhaghosa quotes be translations into Pāli from Sinhalese Prakrit, the question naturally arises: why would he claim that he translated his ct.s from the old Sinhalese version, when clearly he made use of ct.s written in Pāli ? It is not possible at this point to give a definite answer to this question. As I have shown above Buddhaghosa's claim is ambiguous. In fact, there is nothing that excludes the possibility that he made use of miscellaneous material for writing his celebrated ct.s, of which some material was probably extant in Pāli and some in Sinhalese. The text to which Buddhaghosa refers in the colophon to his aṭṭhakathās may well have been an old ct. written in Pāli—probably going back to the time of the old commentarial portions of the canon—from which he took the essentials adding, in some cases, original Sinhalese material which he translated from text written in Sinhalese Prakrit. In fact, there is a fair amount of distinctly Sinhalese narratives in Buddhaghosa's works thus indicating his association with Śrī Laṅkā. The fact that he refers to the legendary Sinhalese ct. in the prefaces to his aṭṭhakathās is probably first of all an attempt at consolidating the religious and political prerogatives of the tradition of the Mahāvihāra which he clearly considered to be the true representative of the Buddhist dhamma. It is thus evident that we are forced to reconsider the question of the nature of the alleged Sinhalese aṭṭhakathās.

(Wings to Awakening, Part III F. Concentration & Discernment):

http://dhamma.ru/lib/authors/thanissaro/wings/3f.htm

http://dhamma.ru/canon/an9-35.htm

"The prologue and the colophon of the Samantapasadika furnish us with a good deal of information. Buddhaghosa's own words in the opening stanzas eloquently speak of the commentary he is about to compile. As is usually the case with all his commentaries, it is by no means an original exegesis, but a restatement of the material available to him in the Sihala Atthakatha, for, in his own words it is a navasangahitavannana, "a re-compiled commentary" (Smp. P.T.S., 1414). His implicit faith in the pubbacariya ,"the teachers of yore," and his reliance on their authority in his exposition of the Vinaya are clearly expressed in his opening words (see Smp. i, n. i).

Both in the prologue and in the colophon he acknowledges his indebtedness to the three main versions of the Sihala Atthakatha, the Maha (or Mula) -Atthakatha, the Mahapaccariya, and the Kurundi which he studied under the "wise Elder Buddhamitta who was proficient in the Vinaya" (Smp. P.T.S., 1415). This indebtedness to the Sihala Atthakatha is true of all his commentaries, for Buddhaghosa constantly refers to his commentaries being based on the earlier commentaries available in the language of the Island ; e.g. in the colophons to the commentaries on the four prose Nikayas the following hemi-stisches occur, among other parallel stanzas: sa hi Maha-Atthakathaya saram adaya nitthita maya, "for, it was compiled by me drawing the essence of the Maha-Atthakatha," and, Mul'atthakathaya saram adaya maya imam karontena, "while I was compiling this drawing the essence of the Mula-Atthakatha," both of which refer to the Mahavihara version of the Sihala Atthakatha."

IM: Some people feel that the commentaries, especially those by Buddhaghosa, present a different viewpoint—a more narrow interpretation of Dhamma practice—than the suttas. How do you see the basic Dhamma understanding of the suttas as compared to that in the commentaries? In what ways are they the same or different?

BB: The relationship between the suttas and the commentaries is an extremely complex one and it is risky to make blanket judgments about it. The commentaries are not original works by Buddhaghosa, but edited versions of more ancient commentaries that had been preserved in Sri Lanka. Their historical origins are obscure, but clearly they begin with the suttas themselves; that is, there are suttas that are commentaries on other suttas (e.g. MN 141, SN 12:31, SN 22:3, 4). During the early period of oral transmission, the ancient Buddhist teachers must have developed a body of commentary to go along with the root text, and this no doubt accumulated with each generation in the way a rolling snow ball gathers snow.

The old Sri Lankan commentaries upon which Buddhaghosa drew—no longer extant—were probably an archaeological treasure trove of material from several centuries, perhaps beginning with the personal disciples of the Buddha. Even in the commentaries we inherit, the most ancient layers seem to precede the division of the original unitary Sangha into different Buddhist schools, for they contain material that has found its way into the exegetical traditions of various sects. The later material originates from the teachers of the Theravada lineage after it emerged as a distinct school and thus reflects its own methods of interpretation. There was also a tendency for the schools to exchange interpretative material, but unlike other schools, the conservative Theravadins, to their credit, rigorously kept the newer material outside the canonical works directly ascribed to the Buddha.

To understand what the commentaries are doing at the doctrinal level, we have to remember that the suttas themselves are not uniquely Theravada texts. They are the Theravadin transmission of a class of scriptures common to all the early Buddhist schools, each of which must have had its own way of interpreting them. The commentaries that come to us from Buddhaghosa (and others) take up the task of interpreting these texts from the standpoint of the Theravada school. Their view is thus necessarily narrower than that of the suttas because it is more specific: they view the thought-world of the suttas through the lens of the methods of exegesis developed by the early Theravadin teachers, using these methods to explicate and elaborate upon the early teachings.

If we compare the suttas to a vast expanse of open territory, reconnoitered from above as to the main features of its topography but with its details only lightly sketched, then we might compare the commentaries to a detailed account of the lay of the land. The question is: Are the commentaries simply coming in and describing the landscape in greater detail, or are they bringing in construction crews and building housing schemes, shopping malls and highways on the virgin territory. The answer, I think, would be a combination of both.

To be brief, I would say there are two extreme attitudes one could take to the commentaries. One, often adopted by orthodox Theravadins, is to regard them as being absolutely authoritative almost on a par with the suttas. The other is to disregard them completely and claim they represent "a different take on the Dhamma." I find that a prudent middle ground is to consult the commentaries and use them, but without clinging to them. Their interpretations are often illuminating, but we should also recognize that they represent a specific systematization of the early teaching. They are by no means necessitated by the early teaching, and on some points even seem to be in tension with it.

215 A young Brahmana born near Bodhimanda7, who understood science, the arts and accomplishments and was perfectly versed in the three Vedas, who knew the (various) systems of doctrine thoroughly, who was skilled in disputation and also fond of controversy, wandering about Jambudlpa8, sought out the various masters of controversy. Thus he came (once) to a vihara and

elucidated during the night the ideas of Patanjali1 word for word and quite exhaustively2. Hereupon, the Grand Thera3 (of the vihara) named Revata realised: "This is a being of the highest wisdom; he must be won over," and he said: "Who then is he who cries there with the cry of an ass?" The (Brahmana) said to him: "Dost thou then understand (at all) the meaning of the cry of asses?" and on the reply: "I understand it" he expounded his ideas. Revata answered each single thesis and pointed out the (logical) contradictions. On the request: "Explain then thy own system of doctrine," he held forth to him on the text and content of the Abhidhamma.

The (Brahmana) did not understand it. He asked; "Whose sayings4 are these?" "These are the sayings of the Buddha," answered the other. To the request (of the Brahmana): "Make them known to me," Revata answered: "Thou shalt receive them when thou hast undergone the ceremony of world-renunciation." As the Brahmana craved for the sayings he underwent the ceremony of world-renunciation and learnt the Tipitaka5. He recognised: this path leads alone to the goal6, and accepted it thereafter7. As his speech was profound like that

3 P. thera (= Skr. sthavira) and mahathera are titles of older bhikkhus in leading- positions, something like presbyter.

4 P. manta, skr. mantra. What is meant by this word are the sayings of the Veda. Here the word has a wider meaning-, something like -"sacred text".

5 That is the whole of the canonical books consisting of the three parts Vinaya-, Sutta-, Abhidhammapitaka. See Mhvs. trsl. p. 296, nr. 27.

6 The sentence ekayano ayam maggo is an allusion to a passage in the Samyutta. Here (S. V. 167 8ff.) the Buddha says: ekayano yam (sic!) maggo sattanam visuddhiya . . . nibbanassa Mcchikiriitayi yam idam cattaro satipatthana. We see at once from the passage that ekayana is an adjective something like "alone accessible". In the Chainlogra-Upanishad 7. 1. 2 the word is used substantially to denote a branch of science. Sankara explains it by HitiSaistrti.

of the Buddha he was called Buddhaghosa; for his speech (resounded) through the earth like (that of the) Buddha1. After he had written a book Nanodaya yonder (in Jambudipa), he also wrote the Atthasalini2, an interpretation of the Dhammasangani. The sage (Buddhaghosa) also began to compose a commentary to the Paritta3. When the Thera Revata saw that, he spake the following words: "The text alone has been handed down here (in Jambudipa), there is no commentary here. Neither have we the deviating systems of the teachers4. The commentary in the Sihala tongue5 is faultless. The wise Mahinda who tested the tradition6 laid before the three Councils7 as it was preached by the Perfectly Enlightened one and taught by Sariputta and the others, wrote it in the Sihala tongue and it is spread among the Sihalas. Go thither, learn it8 and render it into the tongue of the Magadhas9. It will bring blessing to the whole world." Thus addressed, the wise (Buddhaghosa) sailed forth joyful in the faith and entered the Island just in the time of this King (Mahanama). He came to the Mahavihara, tie abode of all pious (people), went into the great practising-house10, learned from Samghapala the commentary

in the Sihala tongue and the doctrinal system of the Theras perfectly, reached the conclusion: it is just this system which interprets the intentions of the Master of Truth; gathered together there the community1 and said: "Give me all the books that I may compose a commentary". To test him the community gave him two verses with the words: "Show here thy qualification! Once we have seen it, whe shall give thee all the books." Briefly summing up the three Pitakas2 together with the commentary he wrote the work called Visuddhimagga3. Then calling together the community who was versed in the thoughts of the Enlightened One, he began to read the work in the vicinity of the great Bodhi Tree. But the devatas4 to convince the people of his greatness, caused the book to vanish; but twice and thrice he reproduced it. When the book was brought forth a third time to be read the gods then produced the two other books. Then the bhikkhus read out all the three books together. Neither in composition and content, nor also as regards the sequence (of the subjects5), in the teaching of the Theras, in the quotations6, in words and sen-

-tences was there any kind of deviation in all three books. Then the community satisfied and exceedingly well pleased, cried again and again: "without doubt this is Metteyya!" and handed over to him the books of the three Pitakas together with the commentary. Then dwelling in the Ganthakara-vihara2 which lies far from all unquiet intercourse, he rendered the whole of the Sihala commentaries into the tongue of the Magadhas, the original speech of all. For beings of all tongues this (rendering) became a blessing and all the teachers of the Theravada3 accepted it as the original text. Then haying accomplished what he had to do, he set out for Jambudipa to adore the sacred Bodhi Tree4.

When Mahanama had enjoyed the (dominion of the) earth twenty and two years5 and done many meritorious works, he passed away in accordance with his doing.

For all the power they had amassed and for all the glorious splendours they had enjoyed all the rulers of the earth were at the end unable to escape death. With the thought: thus all beings are subject to the law of decay, the wise man should forever entirely forsake the desire for wealth and even for life.

Here ends the thirty-seventh chapter, called 'The Six Kings', in the Mahavanisa, compiled for the serene joy and emotion of the pious.
